Jennifer Alexander is a triathlete and member of the Kronos Triathlon Club. Jennifer competed at the World Age Group Championships in Switzerland this past summer.  She placed 14th and was the top Canadian in her age category 30-34.

Why is physical activity important to you?

Physical activity has always been a part of my life.  My dad was a good role model; he was a competitive rower and enjoyed the outdoors.  After high school I studied Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, and as a result I developed a strong appreciation for how amazing our bodies are and why it is so important to keep our bodies healthy.

Why have you chosen to promote PA to the public/community?

I have seen how physical activity can bring people together.  I met most of my closest friends through participation in sport.  In fact, I met my finance training with the Kronos Triathlon Club.  We both value physical activity and this strengthens our relationship.

I have also seen how being physically active can help build a persons confidence.  One of my co-workers started to train for a triathlon this year.  She is an ex-smoker, who was overweight and overstressed.  She completed two triathlons this past summer and I have seen an amazing change in her confidence.  She commented on how supportive people have been in her quest to become physically active and that has encouraged her to keep going.  She plans to race again next summer.

Can you describe some of the things you have done to promote PA in your community?

I work hard to be a good role model and lead by example.  I run at lunch and invite others to join me.  I also plan social gatherings that involve physical activity.  I share my experiences with others and encourage them to find an activity that they enjoy.

What does the concept of “giving back to the community” mean to you, and how have you done this?

What comes to mind is the actions “pay it forward”.   There are a number of people behind the scenes who have helped to create special moments in my life - coaches, race organizers, volunteers, family and friends.   There is no way that I’ll ever be able to give back all that they have given me, but what I can do is “pay it forward”.  In other words, work behind the scenes for others to help create special moments in their lives.  All I ask is that they pay it forward too!

For example, one of the ways the triathlon club that I belong to gives back to the community is by organizing the Calgary Kids of Steel Triathlon for children aged 5-19 years.  It is truly an amazing event.  It is so great to see all of the kids swimming, biking and running for the fun of it!  It is our way to promote and encourage children to enjoy being physically active.

What is one thing that you feel is your most important contribution to your community?

Getting out of bed for early morning swim practices even though some days it is really tough!  I know I rely on my teammates and coach to motivate and push me to strive higher, and in return, I want them to know that I will be there for them as well.  I work hard to be a leader in my triathlon club because without clubs or training groups many people would not have the support to be physically active.  I am just one of a number of people that is devoted to keep our triathlon club strong so that the community as a whole can benefit.
