- Horse – you’ll need a basketball and a hoop for this, and two or more players. One person goes for a shot, doing anything they want to get the ball in the hoop (you can make a shot from a distance, or run up to the hoop to get it in, it’s your choice). If the shot is made, the next players all have to copy the shot exactly the same way. If you miss copying the shot, you get one letter from the word ‘horse’ until you’ve spelled the word with missed shots, in which case you are out of the game (5 missed shots and you lose). Whoever makes the most shots wins. Everyone else is a ‘horse.’ You can play this game using any word you want in place of ‘horse.’
- 21 – you need a b-ball, a net, and two players to play. Players take turns trying to shoot the ball into the net (no run-ups or lay-ups allowed - only free throws are allowed). While you try to make a shot, the other player has to pay attention, because wherever the ball lands if the shot is missed is where the next shot has to come from. A made shot is worth one point. If a shot goes in, the player who sunk the shot gets a chance to shoot again. Any shots this player gets into the hoop after the first shot are worth two points, until this player misses again – to win the game it’s good to ‘get on a roll’ and sink several shots in a row. First player to make 21 points wins.
- 500 – this game can be played with a baseball (don’t forget mitts), football, or any other ball that is easy to catch at a distance. You will also need several people in order to play – for this game, the more players the better. One player will ‘serve’ the ball to everyone else, who stand in a group several meters away. The server throws or pitches the ball towards the group and calls out a number between 1 and 500 while the ball is in the air. Whoever catches the ball is awarded the number of points that the throw is worth. For example, the server could throw the ball and yell out “150!” - whoever catches it gets 150 points. First to 500 points wins. To make things more interesting, add this rule: if someone attempts to catch the throw and drops the ball, that player LOSES however many points the throw was worth.
- If you’re around home, get some friends together to play street hockey or soccer
