Read about Glenn Scott - G02's latest success story!
Glenn has always been a healthy active individual pursuing many sports including long distance running, hockey, rugby, snowboarding and white water canoeing. However a serious illness (commonly known as flesh eating disease) in late 1999 changed Glenn's life. He lost both legs above the knee as well as partial musculature of the lower left arm and hand.
Glenn was told by doctors that the reason he survived this disease was because he was fit and active. "This justified for me, why physical activity is such a good lifestyle choice. I think I had a relatively easy time through rehabilitation because I enjoy a physical challenge - and this was a challenge! You have to think about what you can do, instead of what you can't.
Life Changes
My disability has introduced me to many new sports, and I get really charged about trying new activities! I have taken up wheelchair racing, hand cycling, swimming, sit-skiing and skating. I am still able to coach my daughter's lacrosse team as well as soccer for my sons. The loss of my legs hasn't changed so much what I do, just how I do it! I also enjoy talking to children about disabilities. My own kids have taken me to school for "show and tell" and I get the opportunity to talk to them about being disabled from my perspective.
Support System
My wife, my kids and my friends have all been very supportive in helping me remain physically active. The Alberta Wheelchair Sport Association has also assisted in getting me involved in wheelchair racing by providing inspiration, coaching and funding for my racing chair. The Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing has helped me continue to pursue winter sports by providing equipment and lessons at COP for sit-skiing. I was so impressed by the program that I am now a volunteer coach on Friday nights for new disabled skiers!
Words of Inspiration
"Do what you can, with what you have, as you are" - Works spoken by Theodore Roosevelt, the only US president to serve in a wheelchair.
