GO2 – Whatever gets you going
Our Vision
All Calgarians incorporate regular physical activity into their daily lives in a healthy, vibrant city that supports active living at work, school, and play.
Our Mission
Through the collective action of partnerships, GO2 will work to enhance opportunities and inspire all Calgarians to embrace and incorporate daily physical activity into their lives.
GO2 is a city-wide physical activity initiative designed specifically for the citizens of Calgary. It is a cooperative and collaborative effort between multiple organizations that have an interest in encouraging healthy, vibrant, and physically active Calgarians. The GO2 steering committee currently includes:
| -Calgary Health Region | -University of Calgary |
| -City of Calgary | -Calgary Children's Initiative |
| -YMCA Calgary | -Calgary Chamber of Commerce |
| -YWCA Calgary |
Along with several other additional organizations, these partners will work together to help build community and organizational capacity and facilitate the delivery of physical activity opportunities and information to Calgarians.
GO2 was developed to address the current physical inactivity levels in Calgary. While many Calgarians reap the rewards of regular physical activity, there are still over 40% of Calgarians that are not physically active enough to receive health benefits. These important benefits include improved mood and self esteem, stronger muscles and bones, improved posture and balance, reduced stress, better sleep, and improved quality of life. Regular physical activity can also help prevent or improve major conditions such as heart disease, certain forms of cancer, Type II diabetes, osteoporosis, and depression.
In fact, all it takes to start gaining some of the benefits is at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. It can be as simple as a walk in your neighbourhood park or pathway!
On April 11th, GO2 was launched to the public through a large-scale media event that introduced Calgary to our name, logo, tagline, and website. Special guests were on hand to celebrate this special moment, including Mayor Dave Bronconnier, and local athletes from the Calgary Flames, Calgary Stampeders, and a medal-winning Olympian!
