  • PROGRAMS:
    • Join Calgary Corporate Challenge
    • Start a physical activity inter-office challenge: a pedometer or walking/physical activity accumulation challenge with prizes and/or bragging rights.
    • Promote and/or offer Active Living sessions during the lunch hour and over coffee breaks.
    • Encourage stretching breaks for staff at their workstations.  Bring in a fitness professional to lead a workshop.
    • Host, lead or participate in a walking or running club for staff.
    • Create an internal staff newsletter to highlight wellness opportunities and success stories targeting employees. 
  • PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
    • Create a supportive environment through role modeling.  Encourage staff participation by leading the way.
    • Encourage staff to take physical activity breaks and stretching breaks.
    • Provide staff with facilities that encourage and support active living.  Ideas include: secure and sheltered bike racks and/or lockers, showers, lockers and changing spaces, staff rooms equipped with a fridge, microwave and other minor kitchen appliances that encourage healthy eating.
    • An empty meeting room can be used as a Fitness studio. This opportunity can be used to provide classes for staff over lunch or other convenient times during the day.      
    • Make your stairways a Stairway to Health.  Keep them bright and clean with clear signage.  Have an artist paint a mural on the wall or write a story or positive affirmations on the stairs.
    • On escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left.  Move while moving. It is an assist, not a ride.
  • SENIOR MANAGEMENT SUPPORT
  • POLICIES      
    • Implement a physical activity subsidy for staff that purchase memberships for physical activity programs and centres. 
    • Encourage staff to flex their time/days to accommodate their participation in physical activities.
    • Promote flexible work schedules & practices (part-time, job sharing, tele-work etc.)
    • Provide staff with incentives and positive reinforcement that encourages them to participate in physical activity before, during and after their work day.   
    • Capture the importance of physical activity and healthy employees within your company’s vision.
