Warm Weather Activities

  •  Scavenger Hunt – Choose a list of 20 or so items to find (ie: a brown leaf, a black rock, a straw).  Variations: Picture Rally- using a disposable camera, make a list of 20 or so places where you must get your picture taken. (ie: Chinook C-train station, Olympic Plaza). Banana Rally – you must find measurements of certain things in ‘bananas’. (Example : the height of the “H” at Heritage Park). Add a timed factor in here and you’ll not only workout those walking feet, you’ll be racing against time and working your heart and lungs!
  • Picnic – Pack a lunch and a blanket and head out on a bike path / nature trail. Take in the fresh air and great views as you work the muscles in your legs to hike to a great spot to eat.
  • Obstacle Course – Using various items (picnic bench, twig, tree, pile of leaves ..) create a race course that involves all different types of movement (running, jumping, side stepping, crawling etc. Be creative and find ways to use all your muscles!
  • Kick the Can – variation of hide n seek. Fill a can with rocks. The seeker must stay close to the can and try to spot people. If the hiders are spotted, they must sit by the seeker. If a hider can run up and kick the can without being spotted, anyone who has been caught is free to hide again. Seeker must collect all rocks and put them back in the can before they can see again. Great game to get your heart working as you run from hiding spot to kick the can!
  • Camouflage – Variation of hide n seek. Seeker must stay in one spot. Seeker tries to find as many people as they can . When they can no longer find anyone, they call “Numbers Up” and hold up a certain number of fingers. (People hiding must be close enough to see how many fingers are being held up). When seeker calls “Numbers Down”, the first person to get to the seeker and tell them the correct number of  fingers that were held up wins. This will challenge your running speed to get to the seeker before everyone else.
  • Nature Walk – Take a walk through one of Calgary’s beautiful parks and take note of things you might not have noticed before (tracks in the snow, a spider spinning a web, a bird building a nest…) This is a great way to get your legs moving, and take in fresh air for your lungs. City Parks Nature Walks
  • Cornfield Maze – Requires a drive, but is an amazing sight. Explore this maze shaped like the Alberta shield as a group or split up and race to see who can get through the maze faster. This will get your legs moving and could work your heart and lungs if you race! Lacombe Cornfield Maze
