Marie, Alice, and Olive

April 11, 2006

Marie Holmes, 82, and Alice Parker, 66, were skeptical when Move’n Mingle (a physical activity program that incorporates a social aspect), started in the recreation room of their apartment complex. Back then, neither Marie nor Alice had much time or interest in physical activity. Nor did they know about the many health benefits older adults can enjoy by participating in such a program.

However, they decided to try the program and have since becoming faithful participants - even become role models. They have taken up mall walking and recruited a new member, Olive Nielson. The three have gradually built up to an hour of walking, five days a week working out to more than 3 miles everyday! As the weather improves, they are looking forward to walking outdoors.

Today these ladies have a new-found bounce in their steps. While they are modest about their achievement, they do acknowledge the way they feel since making daily physical activity part of their routines. Marie, Alice, and Olive have learned to squeeze their walk in between 8am and 9am so as to not interfere with their other activities.

On top of that, they all report being stronger and can walk for longer periods of time and farther distances. They have better balance so they are not as dependent on their canes. They’ve all noticed some weight loss, sleep better during the night, and generally feel better.

Their enthusiasm is fuelled by their active lifestyles. One can’t deny their zest for life and you only need meet Marie, Alice, and Olive to believe it!

Move 'n Mingle - a physical activity program offered in selected seniors' congregate housing to help seniors lead active and healthy lifestyles.
