Marilyn McLean tells us, in her own words, her story of physical activity.
A day without exercise is like a day without sunshine! There are many ways to make sure you get the needed sunshine, er, exercise everyday. I have been doing regular exercise for over 15 years, and it has become an ingrained part of my life.
Fifteen years ago after the birth of my daughter, I knew I had to pick up the pace and make exercise a part of my everyday life. For one thing, I was a gestational diabetic, and I learned that a percentage of women who are gestational diabetics go on to develop type 2 diabetes.
Having a husband with diabetes was enough to know I wanted to avoid the disease at all costs. The price I had to pay to avoid this devastating disease was to exercise for the rest of my life. Initially I joined programs in my neighbourhood through Parks and Recreation. I met neighbours I never knew before, expanded my social circle, and got into shape.
At work, I was extremely fortunate to have a fitness facility right in my building. The proximity of the centre, the variety of courses, and the fantastic staff at the facility were a bonus. Like the neighbourhood classes, I made new friends and work colleagues, and feel fitter at 54 than I was at 34! I can't imagine that I will ever be without exercise, or sunshine.
