Obesity Through Rose-Coloured Glasses

October 10, 2006

A recent survey commissioned by Dietitians of Canada and Kraft Canada asked parents of children ages 6 to 12 about their opinions surrounding the weight and health of Canada's children.

While 94 percent of Canadians feel that the number of overweight and inactive children is a serious health issue in Canada, only 12 percent of parents thought that their own children were overweight, and zero percent felt that their children were obese. (This compared to a recent Statistics Canada report that 27 percent of Canadian children ages 6 to 12 are overweight, and 13 percent are obese.)

The survey also found that 52 percent of boys and 64 percent of girls are considered to be inactive, and only 4 percent of parents say that they set a good example for their children in terms of being physically active. The results of the survey may point to the need to get the message out to parents about what "overweight" actually means, and how they can help their children to stay within a healthy weight range.
